Tomm is a remarkable neonate, as he is the only known newborn born with his skin condition. Tomm’s father, Geoff Tennent, told 60 Minutes Australia, “I was shocked when the baby was born; I did not expect a newborn to have such a condition.” Tomm’s mother shared her experience as well, stating, “My heart was filled with fear and worry, but I was thrilled to hold the baby.”
The source of Tomm’s peculiar skin condition is still unknown to scientists. They have decided to allow him to develop normally because, despite extensive investigation, they have been unable to determine what caused his epidermis to be so different. Tomm’s DNA has been thoroughly analyzed in an effort to comprehend his origin, but the mystery surrounding his condition remains unresolved.
As the first known child in the world with this condition, he spent two and a half months in the hospital undergoing analysis and examination, presenting a challenge for scientists.
Later, scientists determined that Tomm’s condition was comparable to that of the Chinese Shar-Pei dog breed, which provided some explanations. Scientists neglected the presence of amyloid deposits on Tomm’s epidermis because they were typical of his condition. In addition, Tomm’s epidermis was 100 times thicker than average skin.
However, it was anticipated that the excess thickness would progressively diminish and his skin would revert to its natural state. The doctors hoped and anticipated that Tomm’s condition would improve, and thankfully, it did. His physician, Andrew Ramsden, predicted that Tomm’s skin condition would nearly disappear as he aged. Consequently, as Tomm grew older, his thickened epidermis progressively disappeared.
As a consequence of Tomm’s improving health, some of the fractures in his vertebra, legs, wrists, and feet are healing. Despite his initial aspect, Tomm has matured into an endearing young man.
Unfortunately, while his mother Debbie, a baker, was sharing their story, someone made a derogatory remark indicating Tomm should not be taken out in public and should remain at home. This made Debbie understandably distraught.
Tomm’s academic accomplishments are equally remarkable to his personal tale, and his parents are justifiably proud of him. They have also stated that they do not expect their son to conceal or be embarrassed of his condition. They are optimistic about the future of their society and believe it will become more tolerant and inclusive.
